Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
water solubility
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study without detailed documentation
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
OECD Guideline 105 (Water Solubility)
Principles of method if other than guideline:
The solubility of the ester was determined by saturating a volume of deionised water, with an excess of ester until two distinct layers  formed. The mixtures was placed on a rotary mixer for 20 minutes and then allowed to equilibrate for a further four hours at 20ºC. An aliquot of  the lower
layer (aqueous phase) was carefully removed using a Pasteur pipette, thus avoiding contamination from the upper layer. This aqueous phase was quantitatively analysed by RP-HPLC. The solubility of the  ester in water is expressed as g kg-1.
GLP compliance:
not specified
Type of method:
flask method
Specific details on test material used for the study:
Methyacrylic acid (CAS: 79-41-4)

Batch No.: 98/42
Supplier: Ineos Acrylics
Key result
Water solubility:
98 g/L
Temp.:
20 °C
pH:
>= 1.2 - <= 2
Details on results:
pH concentration: 98 g/l at 20 °C (pH: 1.2 - 2.0)
Conclusions:
Interpretation of results (migrated information): very soluble (> 10000 mg/L)
Using a scientifically valid method a water solubility of 98 g/L at 20°C was reported.
Executive summary:

The water solubility of methacrylic acid was tested by the flask method and analysed by HPLC. The water solubility was reported with 98 g/L at 20°C.

Description of key information

The water solubility of methacrylic acid was tested by the flask method and analysed by HPLC. The water solubility was reported with 98 g/L at 20°C (Jones 2002).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Water solubility:
98 g/L
at the temperature of:
20 °C

Additional information

According a technical data collection reported in Ullmann Ezyclopedia of Industrial Chemial (Bauer, 1990) methacrylic acid is misciblle in water.
