Adsorption of MAA to soil was investigated using 5 different soil types. The adsorption constants (Koc) ranged from 1.7 to 52 with an average value of 15 (log Koc 1.18). Therefore, adsorption to solid soil phase of methacrylic acid is not expected. MAA dissociates when dissolved in water. It is expected to evaporate very slowly from the water surface. With regard to distribution modelling (Mackay Level I and III), MAA acts differently from the esters (MMA, EMA, n-BMA and i-BMA and 2-EHMA). In the equilibrium model (Mackay I) MAA partitions preferably to water due to its high water solubility. In the Mackay III model, which also takes degradation processes into account, MAA, when released to air, is predicted to be rapidly degraded but due to the slower degradation processes in soil and water, will have a greater presence in soil and to a lesser degree in water.
