Description of key information

No reliable long-term toxicity data are available for the toxicity of Ethyl (S)-lactate to fish. However, a waiver is applied for this endpoint.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Under column 2 of the Annex IX of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 the specific rules for adaptation from column 1 are that the long-term toxicity testing shall be proposed by the registrant if the chemical safety assessment according to Annex I indicates the need to investigate further the effects on fish.

Testing is waived since no adverse effects of Ethyl (S)-lactate were observed in a short-term toxicity test with zebra fish (Danio rerio) at concentration up to 100 mg/L, i.e. the limit concentration for classification as aquatic toxic under CLP. Furthermore, ethyl lactate is readily biodegradable (see section 5.2.1) and as a consequence, no chronic exposure of fish is expected.

Therefore, and for reasons of animal welfare, a long-term toxicity study in fish was not provided.
