Details on test animals or test system and environmental conditions:
TEST ANIMALS
- Source: Charles River, Stolzenseeweg 32-36, D-S8353 Kisslegg, Germany
- Age at study initiation: 15 weeks
- Weight at study initiation: male : 2.8 kg, females: 2.6 - 2.9 kg
- Housing: Individually in stainless steel cages with an automatic cleaning system, equipped with feed hoppers, drinking water bowls and wood for gnawing.
- Diet: Pelleted standard Kliba 341, Batch 87/94 rabbit maintenance diet ("Kliba", Klingentalmuehle AG, CH-4303 Kaiseraugst), ad libitum.
- Water: Community tap water from Itingen, ad libitum.
- Acclimation period: Four days under test conditions after health examination.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
- Temperature (°C): 20 +/- 3
- Humidity (%): 40-70
- Air changes (per hr): 10-15
- Photoperiod (hrs dark / hrs light): 12/12

IN-LIFE DATES: From: 1995-01-11 To: 1995-01-19

Test system

Type of coverage:
semiocclusive
Preparation of test site:
shaved
Vehicle:
unchanged (no vehicle)
Controls:
not required
Amount / concentration applied:
TEST MATERIAL
- Amount applied: 0.5 g
- Concentration: The test article was moistened with bidistilled water before application.

VEHICLE
no vehicle
Duration of treatment / exposure:
4 h
Observation period:
72 h (no longer observation period, as no skin irritation occured after 72 h)
Number of animals:
1 male and 2 females
Details on study design:
TEST SITE
- Area of exposure: dorsal
- coverage: The test article was applied to approx. 6 cm2 of the intact skin of the clipped area.
- Type of wrap if used: Test area was covered with a 3.0 cm x 3.0 cm patch of surgical gauze. The gauze was covered with a semi-occlusive dressing. The dressing was wrapped around the abdomen and anchored with an elastic bandage.

REMOVAL OF TEST SUBSTANCE
- Washing: The dressing was removed and the skin was flushed with lukewarm tap water to clean the application site so that the reactions (erythema) were clearly visible at that time.
- Time after start of exposure: 4 h

SCORING SYSTEM: Draize scoring system according to EU and OECD guidelines.

Irritant / corrosive response data:
The test system showed a primary irritation score of 0.00 (max. 8.0) when applied to healthy intact rabbit skin. Local signs (mean values from 24 to 72 hours) consisted of grade 0.00 erythema and grade 0.00 edema.
Other effects:
CLINICAL SIGNS AND VIABILITY / MORTALITY
No systemic symptoms were observed in the animals during the test and observation period, and no mortality occurred.

COLORATION
In the area of application, red staining of the treated skin by coloring of the test article was observed.

CORROSION
No irreversible alteration of the treated skin was observed; nor were corrosive effects evident on the skin.

BODY WEIGHTS
The body weight gain of all rabbits was within the normal range of variability.
