4-Vinylpyridine (4VP) does not hydrolyse in water to a significant degree. Absorption of water promotes autopolymerisation (see stability studies). The behaviour of 4-vinylpyridine in the atmosphere was assumed to be similar to that of structural analogue 2-vinylpyridine, which does react in the atmosphere with ozone, hydroxyl and nitrate radicals, to form primarily 2-pyridinecarboxyaldehyde. Under ambient atmospheric conditions, the lifetime of 2VP due to reaction with hydroxyl radicals, nitrate radicals and ozone is approximately 3 hours, 4 hours and 1 day, respectively. This is similar to the well-known atmospheric fate pathway of styrene conversion to benzaldehyde.
