Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Justification for classification or non-classification

Refer to the corresponding section of the CuO and Cr2O3 CSRs.

Copper dichromium tetraoxide is highly insoluble and is not classified following exposure by the oral, dermal or inhalation routes.  For risk assessment purposes, it is assumed to have a similar toxicity profile to copper oxide and chromium (III) oxide, two relatively insoluble copper and chromium (III) substances.

Although the available animal and human data on the carcinogenicity of copper and its compounds are deficient in several respects, it was concluded that the findings do not raise concerns with respect to carcinogenic activity. Consequently, further tests investigating this end-point were not recommended.

In the case of chromium (III) oxide, there are no studies in animals showing clear evidence of Cr (III) carcinogenicity.  Studies of workers in tanneries reported no association between exposure to chromium (III) and excess risk of cancer.  The results of the available studies do not trigger classification according to CLP/GHS criteria.

In view of the above it is concluded that copper dichromium tetraoxide does not have carcinogenic potential.
