Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Justification for classification or non-classification

Guidance on skin sensitisation testing stipulates that new in vivo tests on guinea pigs should no longer be conducted.  It is, however, appropriate to make full use of existing data of this type.  This is particularly the case for copper-containing compounds, given the known tendency for the preferred LLNA method to produce false positive results for these substances.  Therefore, instead of generating new in vitro or LLNA data on copper dichromium tetraoxide, a read-across to existing data for the analogous substances copper oxide (CuO) and chromium oxide (Cr2O3) is proposed.  Based on the results of the existing in vivo guinea pig studies on these substances, it is concluded that copper dichromium tetraoxide should not be classified on the basis of skin sensitisation potential.

Similarly, there is no indication based on read-across that copper dichromium tetraoxide should be classified as a respiratory sensitiser.
