Description of key information

Appearance:

Chemical Metam-sodium physically appear as a white color crystalline solid.

Melting point:

Chemical metam-sodium does not have melting point it decomposes without melting when heated.

Boiling Point:

The study does not need to be conducted because the substance is a solid which decomposes before boiling. Chemical metam-sodium does not have melting point it decomposes without melting when heated.

Density:

Based on prediction done using ACD/I-Lab 2.0,the density of chemical Metam-sodiuml was estimated to be 1.20 g/cm3.

Particle size distribution:

The particle size distribution of Metam-sodium was determined by granulometric analysis with rotap sieve shaker. The particle size distribution was determined to be in the range of 150 micron to 25 micron.

Vapour pressure:

Vapour pressure of chemical Metam-sodium is determine to be 2666.44 Pa at temperature 25 Deg C.

Partition coefficient:

Based on the available data from secondary source, the partition coefficient (log Pow) value of the substance Metam-sodium was determined according to OECD Guideline 107 (Partition Coefficient (n-octanol / water), Shake Flask Method) and was evaluated to be -1.89. Based on the experimental value, chemical Metam-sodium can be considered to be hydrophilic in nature.

Water solubility:

Water solubility of chemical metam-sodium is determine to be 722000 mg/L at temperature 20 Deg C. From this water solubility value it is concluded that chemical Metam-sodium is very soluble in water.

Surface tension:

In accordance with column 2 of Annex VII of the REACH regulation, the study need only be conducted if surface activity is a desired property of the chemical. Metam-sodium (CAS no. 137-42-8) is used as a soil fumigant, pesticide, herbicide, and fungicide. For this use, surface activity is not an important property. Hence this study was considered for waiver.

Flash point:

The study does not need to be conducted because decomposition occurred during the melting point study.

Auto flammability:

Metam-sodium did not catch fire on being exposed to air at room temperature of 27°C pressure of 966 hPa. This indicates that Metam-sodium is not auto-flammable.

Flammability:

Metam-sodium does not indicate any ignition when the flame of bunsen burner having temperature of approximately 950°C is brought in contact with it. Thus it can be concluded that Metam-sodium is not flammable at high temperature. However since such high temperatures are not found under normal circumstances of transportation and use, thus Metam-sodium was considered non-flammable.

Explosiveness:

The study does not need to be conducted because there are no chemical groups present in the molecule which are associated with explosive properties.

Oxidizing properties:

The study does not need to be conducted because the substance is a solid.

Additional information

Appearance:

Chemical Metam-sodium physically appear as a white color crystalline solid.

From other reliable sources & authoritative database it is concluded that chemical Metam-sodium appear as a crystalline solid having unpleasent odor & colorless crystals with an odor like that of carbon disulfide.

Melting point:

Chemical metam-sodium does not have melting point it decomposes without melting when heated.

Vapour pressure:

Vapour pressure of chemical Metam-sodium is determine to be 2666.44 Pa at temperature 25 Deg C.

From other reliable sources it is concluded that vapour pressure of chemical Metam-sodium is 2799.76 Pa at temperature 25 Deg C.

Partition coefficient:

Based on the available data in a key study from secondary source, the partition coefficient (log Pow) value of the substance Metam-sodium was determined according to OECD Guideline 107 (Partition Coefficient (n-octanol / water), Shake Flask Method) and was evaluated to be -1.89.

In a supportingstudy from authoritative database and secondary source, the partition coefficient (log Pow) value of the substance Metam-sodium was determined to be ranges from -2.04 to -2.05 at a temperature of 22°C and pH 7.0, respectively.

Another supportingstudy from handbook and authoritative databases, the partition coefficient (log Pow) value of the substance Metam-sodium was determined to be <1.0 at a temperature of 25°C, respectively.

In an additional study from secondary source indicates that the partition coefficient (log Pow) value of the substance Metam-sodium was determined to be -2.15 at pH 9.0, respectively.

Thus, on the basis of available information, the logKow value of the chemical Metam-sodium was determined to be ranges from <1.0to -2.05, respectively. On the basis of this value, chemical Metam-sodium can be considered to be hydrophilic in nature.
