Preliminary test

An approximate value of the ignition temperature of the test item was first determined by a preliminary test. Table 1 gives the results of the preliminary test. In the preliminary test, the lowest temperature at which an ignition occurred was 417.9 °C. The atmospheric pressure during the preliminary test was 99750 Pa.

*The temperature was selected at the ZPA3 corresponding to an initial oven temperature of 200 °C. As the test item showed no ignition at 373.3 °C, a higher temperature was selected for the subsequent ignition trials corresponding to a new initial oven temperature of 395 °C. Using a constant heating rate, the subsequent ignition trials were conducted every 20 ± 5 K.

Main test

First test series:

The ignition attempts of the first test series of the main determination are shown in Table 2. The lowest temperature at which an ignition occurred in the first test series was 398 °C. The atmospheric pressure during the first thirteen ignition trials was 100881 Pa and during the remaining ignition trials 100193 Pa.

Result

According to the applied DIN 51794 three lowest values of the main test have to lie within a range of 10 K (if auto-ignition temperature is above 300 °C). Table 5 summarizes the lowest temperatures at which an ignition occurred in the three test series of the main test.
