To produce the different Water Accommodated Fractions (WAFs) 62.8 mg, 125.2 mg, 250.5 mg and 500.0 mg of the test item were added each to 5 litres of dilution water, treated for 60 seconds at 8000 rpm with an ultra turrax and then stirred for 24 h on a magnetic stirrer. Finally undissolved particles of the test item were removed by filtration using aseptic filters (Sartobran 150 sterile capsule) with a pore size of 0.45 + 0.2 μm. The pH was measured to be 7.8 - 7.9. Finally 7 fish were given to all WAFs and the control.

A suitable selective and sensitive chromatographic method for the determination of the test item in aqueous solutions could not be established and an accompanying analysis by the means of a chromatographic method cannot be performed.
Because aniline seems to have an influence on the toxic effects of Butanal, reaction products with aniline, the aniline content was analysed during the test with the sponsor’s agreement. To record the total amount of dissolved substance the content of the test item during the exposure period was additionally verified by DOC determination.

- Executive summary:
A study was performed to assess the acute toxicity of test item to Danio rerio under static conditions. The study was conducted in accordance with Council Regulation (EC) No 440/2008, Method C.1 'Acute toxicity for Fish' (2008) which is in most parts equivalent to the OECD Guideline for Testing of Chemicals No. 203 'Fish, Acute Toxicity Test' (1992). Groups of seven fish of the recommended size were exposed to a range of concentrations, nominally 12.5, 25.0. 50.0 and 100.0 mg/L of the test item dissolved in dilution water. Auxiliaries used to prepare the test media were an ultra turrax, a magnetic stirrer and aseptic filters. Observations were made on the numbers of dead fish and the incidence of sub-lethal effects after 2, 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours of exposure. After 96 hours of exposure a LL value of 48.8 mg/L was obtained. The tes item has not a definite or unique structure and consists of several constituents.
