Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The water solubility of alpha pinene (2.75 mg/L at 20°C) being the lowest water solubity of the main constituents of the substance, this value was retained for the chemical safety assessment of the substance.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Water solubility:
2.75 mg/L
at the temperature of:
20 °C

Additional information

In a weight of evidence approach, literature data and experimental values were gathered for the main constituents of the substance. For dipentene and alpha pinene, a read-across approach was used, with d-limonene and (-)-alpha pinene respectively. When several values were available for one constituent, the arithmetic mean value was calculated.

In this way the following water solubilities were determined for the main constituents of Hydrocarbons, terpene processing by-products :

- terpinolene : Ws = 5.79 mg/L at 20°C

- alpha pinene (read across with (-)-alpha pinene) : Ws = 2.75 mg/L at 20°C

- dipentene (read across with d-limonene) : Ws = 4.84 mg/L at 20°C

- camphene : Ws = 4.2 mg/L at 20°C

- gamma terpinene : Ws = 8.68 mg/L.

Therefore, the main constituents of the substance have a water solubilty in the range 2.75 - 8.68 mg/L. The lower limit of this range was considered as the relevant key value for the chemical safety assessement.

Thus the water solubility of alpha pinene (2.75 mg/L at 20°C) was retained for the chemical safety assessment.
