Description of key information

The biodegradability of butyl-(S)-lactate was calculated by QSAR estimation using EpiSuite 4.1/BIOWIN, Biowin 1–7. All sub-model results unequivocally predict that butyl-(S)-lactate is readily biodegradable (including anaerobic degradation); the predicted time frame for ultimate degradation is days to weeks. Supporting information on the biodegradability suggests as well that butyl-(S)-lactate is readily biodegradable. Due to the ready biodegradability, a study on hydrolysis was not conducted. Based on the low log Kow of 1.1, the substance is expected to have low potential for adsorption to sediment and soil. In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex VIII, the adsorption/desorption screening test has therefore not been conducted.

The substance has a high water solubility. Due to its physicochemical properties, butyl-(S)-lactate will be present, remain, or distribute to, aqueous compartments, and will be rapidly degraded or metabolized there.
