Description of key information

Phototransformation

In accordance with Annex X of the Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH), information regarding the photo-transformation in air, as well as in water and soil, is not mandatory.

Stability

There are no studies available for the determination of hydrolysis of the test substance. However, there is a reliable study available for a structurally similar substance. The calculated half-lives were all greater than 175 days indicating the test substance was hydrolytically stable under the conditions of the test.

Biodegradation

A reliable study to determine the ready biodegradability for the test substance, dimethyldioctylammonium chloride is available. After 28 days, there was 73% degradation the test substance and therefore can be classified as readily biodegradable under the conditions of the test. 

Bioaccumulation

In accordance with Annex IX of the Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemical (REACH), information regarding the aquatic bioaccumulation is not mandatory.

The experimentally determined Log POWfor the test substance, dimethyldioctylammonium chloride (C8DAQ) of 0.1 at 21oC suggests the test substance has a very low potential for bioaccumulation in the aquatic environment and no additional testing is required. In addition, the test substance may be considered readily biodegradable which may lead to relatively low concentrations of the test substance in the aquatic environment and thus to low concentrations in aquatic organisms. Furthermore, readily biodegradable substance are likely to be rapidly metabolised in aquatic organisms.

Transport and distribution

There are no studies available for the estimation of adsorption/desorption of the test substance. However, there is a reliable study available for a structurally similar substance. A reliable study to determine the adsorption/desorption using four soils showed a measured Koc of >437, 805 for adsorption and >230,498 for desorption. Koc values greater than 5,000 denote immobility in soil. Therefore, the test substance may be classified immobile in all soil types and should not pose a probable environmental risk for contamination of groundwater.

The Henry’s Law Constant was calculated for the read across substance, N,N-Didecyl-N,N-dimethylammonium carbonate (DDACarbonate) using results from the vapour pressure and water solubility tests at 20°C. The Henry’s Law constant was calculated at 1.78 x 10-6 Pa m3/mol.
