Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates:

Data available for the structurally and functionally similar read across chemicals has been reviewed to determine the short term toxicity of Daphnia magna of the test chemical Ferric hypophosphite (7783 -84 -3).The studies are as mentioned below:

1. The acute immobilization of Daphnia magna was performed using test material for 48h.The acute immobilization tests showed that in general the test material were not acutely toxicto D. magna: even at 100 ppmDue to the low toxicity of magnetite, we also evaluated the toxic

effects at 1000 ppm although according to the test guidelines (OECD). However, even at 1000 ppm the 50% inhibitory effect was not observed. Hence , The effect concentration was observed to be > 1000 mg/l.

2.The immobilization test of Daphnia magna was performed for test material as per OECD 202 . Groups of 20 water fleas, Daphnia magna, (< 24 h old, 4 replicates of 5 neonates) were exposed to uncontaminated water, 0.01, 0.1, 1, 10 and 100 mg as/L under static conditions in a range finding test. The duration of the test was 48 h.The effect concentration of test material on Daphnia magna was observed to be >100 mg/l.

Thus, based on the above summarised studies, Ferric hypophosphite and it’s structurally and functionally similar read across substance, it can be concluded that effect concetration value is greater than 100 mg/L. Thus, comparing this value with the criteria of CLP regulation,Ferric hypophosphite cannot be classifiedfor short term toxicity for aquatic invertebrates .Hence, based on the data available for the structurally and functionally similar

read across, test chemical Ferric hypophosphite is not likely to be toxic atleast in the dose range of >100 mg/L .

Toxicity to aquatic algae and cynobacteria:

Data available for the structurally and functionally similar read across chemicals has been reviewed to determine the short term toxicity of aquatic algae and cynobacteria of the test chemical Ferric hypophosphite (7783 -84 -3).The studies are as mentioned below:

1.The growth inhibition effects of test chemical was tested with the green algae Scenedesmus subspicatus. The cell growth was measured 24, 48 and 72 hours after initiation of the test.

The test was performed in a limit test design with 6 control vessels and 6 test vessels with the highest concentration of 100 mg/L.

The effect concentration of test chemial on Scenedesmus subspicatus was observed to be >100 mg/l.

2.Test material was used as a test material to evaluate its toxicity to aquatic algae and cynobacteria on Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata  . The effect concentration of test chemical was observed to be 200mg/l.

Thus, based on the above summarised studies, Ferric hypophosphite and it’s structurally and functionally similar read across substance, it can be concluded that effect concetration value is in the range >100 -200 mg/L. Thus, comparing this value with the criteria of CLP regulation, Ferric hypophosphite cannot be classified for toxicity to aquatic algae and cynobacteria .Hence, based on the data available for the structurally and functionally similar read across, test chemical Ferric hypophosphite is not likely to be toxic atleast in the dose range of >100 -200 mg/L .
