Description of key information
Data relating to benzoate salts and lithium salts have been considered to set a potential PNEC.
The effects of benzoic acid, sodium benzoate and lithium salts have been considered in this review and algea appear to be more sensitive than either fish or Daphnia. The algal data have been used to set the PNEC.
The toxicity to sodium benzoate (IC50 30 mg/l) appears significantly greater than the toxicity of benzoic acid, suggesting that the sodium itself may be leading to reduction in growth rate.
The toxicity of lithium was estimated from different sources, with the lowest reliable IC50 of approximately 12 mg/l Li
It is considered conservative to use the IC50 of 30 mg/l to set a figure for estimating PNEC.
