Description of key information

Appearance:

On the basis of physical observation ,the chemical Disodium 2-amino-5-[(4- sulphonatophenyl)azo]benzenesulphonate was found to be yellow powder in appearance.

From authoritiave database Hazmap category details (2015),the chemical C.I. Acid Yellow 9 was observed to be solid in appearance.

Other supporting study also suggests that the chemical C.I. Acid Yellow 9 is powdered soild in appearance.

Melting point:

The melting point determination of Disodium 2-amino-5-[(4- sulphonatophenyl)azo]benzenesulphonate (CAS No. 2706-28-7) was done following OECD Guideline 102 and according to the metal block capillary method. The test was conducted and decomposition temperature range was found to be 375 °C-378.5 °C at 976.9hPa.

Boiling point:

the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is a solid which decomposes before boiling

Density:

The density of test item Disodium 2-amino-5-[(4-sulphonatophenyl)azo]benzenesulphonate (CAS No. 2706-28-7)was determined following OECD Guideline 109 and according to the test methods: Pour density and tapped density of powders” recommended in The International Pharmacopoeia, Fourth Edition, 2014 using bulk density apparatus. The mean pour density and tapped density of test item is was found to be 0.4356 g/cm³ and 0.5003 g/cm³at 27.3 °C and 978.3 hPa.

Particle size distribution:

The particle size distribution of test test item Disodium 2-amino-5-[(4- sulphonatophenyl)azo]benzenesulphonate (CAS No. 2706-28-7 ) was determined by granulometric analysis with rotap sieve shaker. The particle size distribution was determined to be in the range of 150 microns to 10 microns.

Vapour pressure:

Modified Grain method was used to estimate the vapour pressure of the test chemical using MPBPVP v1.43 of EPI SUITE. The estimated vapour pressure of Disodium 2-amino-5-[(4-sulphonatophenyl)azo] benzenesulphonate was 6E-017 Pa at 25°C

It is reported as 0.000000001 Pa for the chemical safety assessment due to the limitation in the field.

Partition coefficient:

KOWWIN v 1.68 was used to estimate the octanol - water partition coefficient of the test chemical. The estimated logPow of the test chemical is -3.49. Based on this value,Disodium 2-amino-5-[(4-sulphonatophenyl)azo] benzenesulphonate can be considered to be hydrophillic in nature.

Water solubility:

The experimental water solubility of the test chemical was8E+004 mg/L.Based on the results, it can be concluded thatDisodium 2-amino-5-[(4-sulphonatophenyl)azo] benzenesulphonate is very soluble in water.

Surface tension:

In accordance with column 2 of Annex VII of the REACH regulation, the study need only be conducted if surface activity is a desired property of the chemical. Disodium 2-amino-5-[(4-sulphonatophenyl)azo]benzenesulphonate(CAS No.2706-28-7) is used as a dye. For this use, surface activity is not an important property. Hence this study was considered for waiver.

Flash point:

The flash point determination of Disodium 2-amino-5-[(4-sulphonatophenyl)azo]benzenesulphonate (CAS No. 2706-28-7)was done following closed cup method using Pensky-Martens flash point apparatus. The test was conducted in replicates and mean flash point was found to be 159.3°C at 977.6hPa.

Autoflammability:

Disodium 2-amino-5-[(4-sulphonatophenyl)azo]benzenesulphonate  did not catch fire on being exposed to air at room temperature of 27°C and atmospheric pressure of 966 hPa. This indicates that Disodium 2-amino-5-[(4-sulphonatophenyl)azo]benzenesulphonate is not auto-flammable.

Flammability:

Disodium 2-amino-5-[(4-sulphonatophenyl)azo]benzenesulphonate does not indicate any ignition when the flame of bunsen burner having temperature of approximately 950°C is brought in contact with it. Thus it can be concluded that Disodium 2-amino-5-[(4-sulphonatophenyl)azo]benzenesulphonate  is not flammable at high temperature. However since such high temperatures are not found under normal circumstances of transportation and use, thus Disodium 2-amino-5-[(4-sulphonatophenyl)azo]benzenesulphonate was considered non-flammable for chemical safety assessment.

pH:

The pH determination of test item Disodium 2-amino-5-[(4-sulphonatophenyl)azo]benzenesulphonate (CAS No 2706-28-7) was done following OECD guideline 122. pH of 1% w/v solution was measured with the help of pH meter and it was observed to be 7.82at 28 °C.

Viscosity:

In accordance with Section 2 of REACH Annex XI, information requirement section 7.17, this study cannot be conducted on solid materials or gases. According to ECHA Chapter 7 guidance, viscosity measurement is only relevant to liquids.2-amino-5-[(4-sulphonatophenyl)azo]benzenesulphonate is a yellow colored powder.Hence this study can be considered for waiver.
