Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

Since no studies investigating the toxicity of Fatty acids, C18-unsatd., dimers, hydrogenated, 2-ethylhexyl esters (CAS 68440-06-2) to aquatic algae are available, in accordance to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5 a read-across to the structurally related source substance Fatty acids, C18-unsatd., dimers, 2-ethylhexyl esters (CAS 68334-05-4) was conducted. The target substance Fatty acids, C18-unsatd., dimers, hydrogenated, 2-ethylhexyl esters (CAS 68440-06-2) is characterized by two dimerised fatty acid moieties (C18) esterified with the alcohol component 2-ethylhexanol. The source substance Fatty acids, C18-unsatd., dimers, 2-ethylhexyl esters (CAS 68334-05-4) is characterized as a dimerised ester of two C18:1 fatty acids esterified with 2-ethylhexanol.This read-across is justified in detail in the overall summary (IUCLID Section 6.1) and within the analogue justification in IUCLID Section 13. In this case of read-across, the best suited (highest degree of structural similarity, nearest physico-chemical properties) read-across substance was used for the assessment.

The study with the read-across substance Fatty acids, C18-unsatd., dimers, 2-ethylhexyl esters (CAS 68334-05-4) was performed according to OECD 201 (GLP) and investigated the toxicity to freshwater algae (Swarbrick and Smyth, 2005). The green algae Selenastrum capricornutum was exposed for 72 h to a limit Water Accommodated Fraction (WAF) concentration of nominal 100 mg/L. No effects on algal growth was observed resulting in an EL50 (72 h) > 100 mg/L (nominal) The NOELR (72 h) was derived to be ≥ 100 mg/L (nominal).

Based on the available results from a structurally related read-across substance (in accordance to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5) which is characterized by a similar ecotoxicological profile and comparable structure, it can be concluded that Fatty acids, C18-unsatd., dimers, 2-ethylhexyl esters (CAS 68334-05-4) will not exhibit effects on aquatic algae up to the limit of water solubility.
