Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Parent compound: In contact with water, the substance will hydrolyse rapidly.
Hydrolyisis product ethanol: According to structural properties, hydrolysis is not probable.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Hydrolysis of ethyl chloroformate was tested following OECD TG 111. At 25 °C the half-lives at pH 4, 7 and 9 were determined to be 23.2, 20.0 and 14.9 minutes, respectively. The corresponding rate constants were 4.99E-04 s-1 at pH 4, 5.79E-04 s-1 at pH 7 and 7.75E-04 s-1 at pH 9. The predicted hydrolysis products ethanol, HCl and CO2 were identified by gas chromatography using marker standards (Safepharm, 2003). Ethanol is hydrolytically stable (OECD, 2005).
