Stability of CAS#756-12-7 to abiotic processes was assessed in one phototransformation study and three studies that examined hydrolysis in aqueous medium. Initial hydration was very fast (t½ << 11.5 minutes), with quantitative conversion to a diol intermediately before the first analysis could be done. Parent was not observed in these experiments. The diol then cleaved to form two degradation products over a somewhat longer period of time. In the phototransformation experiment, the atmospheric lifetime was 16 days. Phototransformation depends only on available light. Conversely, atmospheric hydrolysis depends on the presence of liquid water droplets which are present only at a low volume fraction under most circumstances (1). Therefore, photodegradation is expected to be the dominant process in the atmosphere.
