Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

vapour pressure
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the melting point is above 300°C
Justification for type of information:
Expert judgement based on observation, knowledge of the manufacturing method, and analytical data e.g. on the composition of CMS.
Reason / purpose for cross-reference:
data waiving: supporting information
Reason / purpose for cross-reference:
data waiving: supporting information
Conclusions:
In complience with the REACH regulation, data on vapour pressure was waived for both silicon dioxide (CAS 7631-86-9) and calcium silicate (CAS1344-95-2) as the melting point was > 300 °C (OECD SIDS, 2004). Measurements of melting point was performed on synthetic amorphous silicon dioxide, whereas for calcium silicate, a read-across from synthetic amorphous silicon dioxide was made. Taken together, measurment of vapour pressure for CMS powder does not need to be conducted as the melting point, as for synthetic amorphous silicon dioxide, is estimated to be above 300 °C.
Executive summary:

In complience with the REACH regulation, measurement of vapour pressure for synthetic amorphous silicon dioxide (CAS 7631-86-9) does not need to be conducted as the melting point is above 300 °C (approximately 1700

°C). Due to sharing similar structural, physical and chemical properties to CMS, synthetic amorphous silica is considered appropriate for read-across purposes. A melting point above 1000 Celcius is also reported in the SDS of CMS powder. Taken together, measurments of vapour pressure for CMS powder do not need to be conducted as the melting point, as for synthetic amorphous silicon dioxide, is estiamted to be above 300 °C.

Description of key information

In compliance with the REACH regulation, measurement of vapour pressure for synthetic amorphous silicon dioxide (CAS 7631-86-9) does not need to be conducted as the melting point is above 300 °C (approximately 1700

°C). Due to sharing similar structural, physical and chemical properties to synthetic amorphous silica,

measurments of vapour pressure for CMS do not need to be conducted as the melting point, as for synthetic amorphous silicon dioxide, is assumed to be above 300 °C. The above statement is an expert judgement based on observation, knowledge of the manufacturing method, and analytical data e.g. on the composition of CMS.

A melting point above 1000 Celcius is also reported in the SDS of CMS powder. Measurements of vapour pressure for the paste form of CMS is not applicable.

Key value for chemical safety assessment
