Result: The test item is considered as not oxidising, as the increase in pressure took place very slowly, taking much more time than the reference mixture.

Validity: In a series of five trials, no result should differ by more than 30 % from the arithmetic mean. Results that differ by more than 30 % from the mean should be discarded, the mixing and filling procedure is improved and the testing is repeated.

For the reference item, no result differed by more than 30% from the mean.

The results for the test item showed three experiments which reached the 2070 kPa and two which did not. In the three experiments with the test item mixture where an increase in pressure above 2070 kPa was found, the three values showed no greater difference than 23%.

Discussion:

All validity criteria were met.

No signs of oxidising properties of the test item were detected.

The reference item showed oxidising properties very clearly and with good repeatability.

No observations were made which might cause doubts concerning the validity of the study outcome.

The result of the test is considered valid.

Executive summary:

The oxidising properties of the test item were tested under GLP, according to the EU A.21 guideline.

 

For the test item, five independent experiments were performed. In none of the experiments, the bursting disc was damaged. For the reference item nitric acid, five independent experiments were performed, too.

 

A 1:1 mixture with cellulose was used. In the five replicate the increase in pressure was very limited, and did not even reach the lower pressure limit for the determination. The observed increase was attributed to the warming of the mixture in the vessel.

The reference mixture showed a fast increase in pressure: 2070 kPa were surpassed within less than seven seconds in all five experiments.

Test item must be considered as not oxidising, because the pressure raise of a mixture of it with cellulose 1:1 shows no faster increase than the reference mixture of nitric acid and cellulose 1:1.

 

The test item is classified to be not oxidising under test conditions.

Justification for classification or non-classification

According to CLP and GHS criteria, the time for pressure rise of a 1:1 mixture of test substance with cellulose was longer than the less sensitive reference substance, therefore the substance is NOT considered as an oxidising liquid.
