Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Parent compound: no data available.

Hydrolysis products pivalic acid and HCl: The inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated if introduced in appropriately low concentrations.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

No data are available for the parent compound pivaloyl chloride (CAS 3282-30-2). However, the parent compound rapidly hydrolyses in contact with water and forms pivalic acid (CAS 75-98-9). Therefore, the toxicity to aquatic microorganisms will be assessed based on the information available for the hydrolysis product pivalic acid.

Parent compound pivaloyl chloride:

No data available.

Hydrolysis product pivalic acid:

The toxicity of the hydrolysis product pivalic acid to microorganisms was tested in a respiration inhibition study according to OECD 209 performed with industrial activated sludge as inoculum (BASF AG, 1983). Originally, the study was conducted with pivaloyl chloride (allowed to hydrolyse for 1 d). However, the data are considererd to refer to the hydrolysis products pivalic acid and HCl. After 30 minutes of incubation, the EC20 was found to be >1995 mg/L, based on nominal test concentrations; covering effects of the hydrolysis products pivalic acid and HCl.
