Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Two studies (one key and one supporting) confirm hydrolytic stability of TBHP. Using methods equivalent to OECD guideline 111 the key study demonstrated hydrolytic half-lives >1 year at pH 4, 7 and 9 and 50C.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The key study reveals an environmental half-life >1 year (no significant degradation seen over 5 days at 50 C and pH values of 4, 7 and 9: environmental half-life >1 year therefore predicted, as per OECD guideline 111).

The supporting study concludes that TBHP is highly stable in water but the addition of Fe3+ appeared to cause limited degradation of TBHP in water. A DT50 of 168 days was calculated for the abiotic degradation of TBHP in the presence of 12 mg/L Fe2+. Addition of the Fe2+ salt also resulted in the formation of higher amounts of an unidentified degradation product (unknown 1). It is assumed that TBHP oxidizes Fe2 +.
