DMCD exhibits a relative lack of abiotic hydrolysis at pH values of 4 and 7, but undergoes concentration dependent hydrolysis at pH 9. The substance shows a high degree of ultimate biodegradation, but does not meet the strict criteria to be considered readily biodegradable. OECD 301 B studies have been conducted on the mixed isomers of dimethyl 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylate (CAS 94 -60 -0) and the trans isomer (CAS 3399 -22 -2). In the study of the trans isomer greater than 74% degradation had occured at day 27, but due to an extended lag phase the 10 day window was not achieved. However, > 60% degradation did occur in slightly less than 12 days after 10% degradation had occurred. In a subsequent study using the mixed isomers the lag period was decreased but biodegradation plateaued at a maximum of 55% at 28 days. Based upon a log Kow of 2.29, the susbstance is expected to have a low potential to bioaccumulate and a low potential for adsorption.
