- Endpoint:
- flash point of flammable liquids
- Type of information:
- experimental study
- Adequacy of study:
- key study
- Study period:
- 29.09.2000 - 07.12.2000
- Reliability:
- 1 (reliable without restriction)
- Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
- test procedure in accordance with national standard methods
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- ISO No., other: DIN 51376 Cleveland - open cup
- GLP compliance:
- yes
- Type of method:
- open cup
- Key result
- Flash point:
- 175.6 °C
- Atm. press.:
- 101 325 Pa
- Interpretation of results:
- GHS criteria not met
- Conclusions:
- The Flash Point of Dyhydrolipoic Acid was determined twice and the mean was calculated to be 175.6 °C.
- Executive summary:
The determination of the flash point of Dihydrolipoic Acid was performed according to Cleveland with an open cup (DIN 51376). Therefore the test substance was heated in the open cup slowly. After 2 °C steps it was tried to inflame the substance with help of an igniting flame. When an ignition was observed on the surface of the sample the temperature was taken as flash point. The Flash Point of Dyhydrolipoic Acid was determined twice and the mean was calculated to be 175.6 °C.
Reference
The determination of the flash point of Glycerine resulted in 181.0 °C and 182.0 °C (mean value 181.5 °C) and a correction factor (F) of 0.97 was calculated according to F = 176.0 / uncorrected flash point (Tb) + correction (see table 1).
The air pressure was 716 Torr, therefore no correction according to table 1 was necessary.
Table 1: Correction air pressure
Air Pressure |
Correction (°C) |
953 mbar (714.8 Torr) – 887 mbar (665.3 Torr) |
2 |
886 mbar (664.5 Torr) – 813 mbar (609.8 Torr) |
4 |
812 mbar (609.0 Torr) – 733 mbar (549.8 Torr) |

For the test substance Dihydrolipoic Acid flash points of 180.0 °C and 182.0 °C were determined. The mean value was 181.0 °C and according to the following formular the flash point was calculated to be 175.6 °C. Also in this case a correction because of the air pressure was unnecessary.
Tn = (Tb + correction) x F
Tn = corrected flash point [°C]
Tb = uncorrected flash point [ °C]
Correction = air pressure correction according to table 1 [°C]
F = Correction factor (see table 1)
Description of key information
