Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

The test is performed using a glass Hubbard pycnometer.

The pycnometer is a glass flask with a close-fitting ground glass stopper with a capillary hole through it to allow for release of spare liquid. The weight of the empty pycnometer and stopper are obtained. The pycnometer is first filled with distilled water and weighed to obtain the volume of the pycnometer using equation 1.

V = mH2O / ρH2O [1]

(V = volume of pycnometer; mH2O = weight of water in pycnometer; ρH2O = density of water)

The density of water is obtained from literature value at the recorded temperature. The same procedure is repeated for the sample. Since the volume is the same as that calculated for water, the density of the sample liquid can be determined using equation 2.

ρL = mL / V [2]

(ρL = density of sample liquid; mL = weight of sample liquid in pycnometer; V = volume of pycnometer)
