Test results for ADONA, the ammonium salt, are also reported for DONA free acid. ADONA exists in dissociated form, as ammonium and DONA anion, in aqueous solution. The ADONA toxicity tests are functionally tests of the combined toxicity of ammonium and DONA anion. Aquatic toxicity testing with DONA as a starting material would be conducted at near-neutral pH. Given a pKa of ca. 2, the organisms would also be exposed to DONA anion if these studies were conducted. Because no toxicity was observed of ADONA, there is no confounding of DONA toxicity with ammonium toxicity, and the ADONA results are directly applicable to DONA.
