Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Reference
Endpoint:
long-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates
Type of information:
read-across from supporting substance (structural analogue or surrogate)
Adequacy of study:
supporting study
Study period:
Early 1980's
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
other: Results published in a scientific review. and peer reviewed in the European RAR.
Qualifier:
equivalent or similar to guideline
Guideline:
OECD Guideline 211 (Daphnia magna Reproduction Test)

yes
Details on sampling:
The test concentrations of the surfactants during the chronic toxicity studies were confirmed using a recently developed technique. The extracted quaternary ammonium chloride compounds are separated and quantified using HPLC with a conductivity detector.

Early instar daphnids (< 24 h old)
Test type:
semi-static
Water media type:
freshwater
Total exposure duration:
21 d
Hardness:
345-363 (White river)
pH:
8.4-8.6 (White river)
Reference substance (positive control):
no
Duration:
21 d
Dose descriptor:

Basis for effect:
other: reproduction and mean length
Duration:
21 d
Dose descriptor:
LC50
Effect conc.:
1.72 mg/L
Nominal / measured:
meas. (not specified)
Conc. based on:
test mat.
Remarks:
in river water
Basis for effect:
reproduction
Remarks on result:
other: 1.31-2.49
Conclusions:
21-Day NOEC = 0.38 mg/L (reproduction)
Executive summary:

The no observed effect concentration (NOEC) for daphnids exposed to 14C-labeled DSDMAC in river water was 0.38 mg/L. Length, total young and mean brood size of adults exposed to mean concentrations of >= 0.76 mg/L DSDMAC were significantly less (p ≤ 0.05) than the same parameters for adults in the controls and in the remaining test waters. For example, total young produced at the 0.76 mg/L concentration was approximately 38% less than that for adults exposed to 0.38 mg/L. Mean brood sizes reflected these differences in young production, generally declining at concentrations > 0.38 mg/L. Reproductive performance was more sensitive than mortality: the 21-d LC50 was 1.72 (95%CI = 1.31-2.49) mg/L. Based on the toxicity data for daphnids in river water, the acute to chronic ratio or application factor is 0.12 (NOEC/LC50=0.38/3.1).
