Melting point/freezing point

The melting point determination of Aluminium, 2-(1,3-dihydro-3-oxo-5-sulfo-2H-indol-2-ylidene)-2,3-dihydro-3-oxo-1H-indole-5-sulfonic acid complex (CAS No. 16521-38-3) was done following OECD Guideline 102 and according to the metal block capillary method. The test item decomposes with a change in colour from dark blue to black .The test was conducted in replicates and mean decomposition temperature range was found to be 280.5°C-284.3°C at 966.2 hPa.

Boiling point

The test item Aluminium, 2-(1,3-dihydro-3-oxo-5-sulfo-2H-indol-2-ylidene)-2,3-dihydro-3-oxo-1H-indole-5-sulfonic acid complex (Common Name: C.I. Food Blue 1) decomposes between 280 °C - 285 °C, with colour change from blue to black. Thus, it was not technically possible to determine the boiling point.

Density

The mean density of test item Aluminium, 2-(1,3-dihydro-3-oxo-5-sulfo-2H-indol-2-ylidene)-2,3-dihydro-3-oxo-1H-indole-5-sulfonic acid complex(CAS No. 16521-38-3)was determined following OECD Guideline 109and according to the method adapted from ASTM D 854-02using glass pyknometer. The mean density of the test item was found to be1.603 g/cm3at 20oC and 966.0hPa.

Particle size distribution (Granulometry)

The particle size distribution of test item Aluminium, 2-(1,3-dihydro-3-oxo-5-sulfo-2H-indol-2-ylidene)-2,3-dihydro-3-oxo-1H-indole-5-sulfonic acid complex (CAS No. 16521-38-3) was determined by granulometric analysis with rotap sieve shaker. The particle size distribution was found to be in the range of 150 micron to 10 micron.

Vapour pressure:

Vapour pressure of substance C.I. Food Blue 1-aluminum lake is 3.16E-22 mm Hg equivalent to 0.0002370195 pa at 25 deg

Partition coefficient:

The partition coefficient of C.I. Food Blue 1-aluminum lake is found to be log kow -3.570

Water solubility:

The C.I. Food Blue 1-aluminum lake is reported to be soluble in water

Surface tension

In accordance with column 2 of Annex VII of the REACH regulation, this testing needs to be carried out only if surface activity is a desired property of the chemical. The chemical Aluminium, 2-(1,3-dihydro-3-oxo-5-sulfo-2H-indol-2-ylidene)-2,3-dihydro-3-oxo-1H-indole-5-sulfonic acid complex (Common Name: C.I. Food Blue 1) is used as a dye. For these uses, surface activity is not a desired property and hence this end point was considered for waiver.

Flash point

The flash point determination of Aluminium, 2-(1,3-dihydro-3-oxo-5-sulfo-2H-indol-2-ylidene)-2,3-dihydro-3-oxo-1H-indole-5-sulfonic acid complex (CAS No.16521-38-3) was done following closed cup method using Pensky-Martens flash point apparatus. The test was conducted in replicates and mean flash point was found to be 228 °C at 966.1 hPa.

Auto flammability

Aluminium, 2-(1,3-dihydro-3-oxo-5-sulfo-2H-indol-2-ylidene)-2,3-dihydro-3-oxo-1H-indole-5-sulfonic acid complex did not catch fire on being exposed to air at room temperature of 27°C pressure of 966 hPa. This indicates that Aluminium, 2-(1,3-dihydro-3-oxo-5-sulfo-2H-indol-2-ylidene)-2,3-dihydro-3-oxo-1H-indole-5-sulfonic acid complex is not auto-flammable.

Flammability

Aluminium, 2-(1,3-dihydro-3-oxo-5-sulfo-2H-indol-2-ylidene)-2,3-dihydro-3-oxo-1H-indole-5-sulfonic acid complex does not indicate any ignition when the flame of bunsen burner having temperature of approximately 950°C is brought in contact with it. Thus it can be concluded that Aluminium, 2-(1,3-dihydro-3-oxo-5-sulfo-2H-indol-2-ylidene)-2,3-dihydro-3-oxo-1H-indole-5-sulfonic acid complex is not flammable at high temperature. However since such high temperatures are not found under normal circumstances of transportation and use, thus Aluminium, 2-(1,3-dihydro-3-oxo-5-sulfo-2H-indol-2-ylidene)-2,3-dihydro-3-oxo-1H-indole-5-sulfonic acid complex was considered non-flammable for chemical safety assessment.

Explosiveness

In accordance with column 2 of Annex VII of the REACH regulation, the study is scientifically unjustified since there are no chemical groups associated with explosive properties present in the molecule of the chemical Aluminium, 2-(1,3-dihydro-3-oxo-5-sulfo-2H-indol-2-ylidene)-2,3-dihydro-3-oxo-1H-indole-5-sulfonic acid complex (Common Name: C.I. Food Blue 1). Thus, the chemical is not likely to be explosive.

Oxidising properties

In accordance with column 2 of Annex VII of the REACH regulation, the substance Aluminium, 2-(1,3-dihydro-3-oxo-5-sulfo-2H-indol-2-ylidene)-2,3-dihydro-3-oxo-1H-indole-5-sulfonic acid complex (Common Name: C.I. Food Blue 1) is incapable of reacting exothermically with combustible materials,on the basis of the chemical structure. It is an organic substance containing halogen atoms chlorine, bromine and oxygen but these elements are not chemically bonded to nitrogen or oxygen. THus, the chemical is unlikely to exhibit oxidising properties and this study was therefore cnsidered for waiver.

pH

The pH determination of test item Aluminium, 2-(1,3-dihydro-3-oxo-5-sulfo-2H-indol-2-ylidene)-2,3-dihydro-3-oxo-1H-indole-5-sulfonic acid complex (CAS No. 16521-38-3) was done following OECD guideline 122. pH of 1% w/v dispersion was measured with the help of pH meter and it was observed to be 4.36 at 36 °C.
