Additional information

Butanal, reaction products with aniline is a multicomponent mixture, consisting mainly of secondary and tertiary aromatic/aliphatic amines with double bounds in the side chains. All compounds are condensation products of aniline and butanal by elimination of H2O.

Determination of the water solubility is technically not feasible as the substance reacts quickly in water forming aniline. In a test similar to OECD Guideline No 105 a water solubility of 5.2 mg/L of the substance in buffer solution pH 4 and addition of 1% acetonitrile was observed. The partition coefficient (Pow) of the test item was determined according to EU Method A.8 (Partition Coefficient) which is equivalent or similar to OECD Guideline 117 (Partition Coefficient (n-octanol / water), HPLC Method). The determined partition coefficient (Log Pow) is in the range of 4.3 to 7.9, yielding a mean value of 5.9 (concentration weighed). The logPow of the final hydrolysis product 3-ethyl-2-propylquinoline was estimated to be 4.71 (see 'Physical and chemical properties).

Butanal, reaction products with aniline has a low acute toxicity (LD50 oral = 3830 mg/kg bw ; LD50 dermal > 7940 mg/kg bw). The substance is not irritating to the skin and eyes and has a moderate sensitising potential. Butanal, reaction products with aniline was negative in all in-vitro gene mutation assays with and without metabolic activation. No toxification via metabolic activation of parent compounds are therefore expected.

The NOAEL in a repeated dose study was 25 mg/kg bw.
