Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

The substance rapidly hydrolyses to its constituent ions including SO42-. Sulphate is an important component of living organisms, including bacteria, and can be expected to be controlled by normal physiological processes (including uptake and excretion/elimination) in all living organisms. Although no formal guideline studies are available to assess the effects of the substance on microorganisms, a number of studies were available to address the effects of sulphates or sulphuric acid on microorganisms. Sulphuric acid effects observed were due to pH effects that will be buffered in most wastewater treatment systems. All of the constituent ions of the substance are components of ambient receiving waters, as well as wastewater treatment plant influents. Supporting studies for this endpoint support the observation that concentrations of sulphate ≤150 mg/L have no effect on the operation of domestic wastewater treatment plants.
