Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.
The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

- other: Well documented expert statement based on the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- other: UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Tests and Criteria, Annex 6, Orange Book, 3rd edition, 1999)
- Deviations:
- no
- GLP compliance:
- no
- Interpretation of results:
- non explosive
- Conclusions:
- Applying the internationally recognised UN Recommendation criteria, T002251 is not to be classified as explosive material and no experimental determination according to the EC test guideline A.14 has to be perfomed.
Thus it can be concluded beyond a reasonable doubt that T002251 is not a potential explosive and does not have a potential for rapid energy release. Nevertheless, this judgement is in respect to classification; it does not necessarily mean that any processing hazards can be discounted.
Reference
1. Reactive Groups
The appraisal of the molecular structure indicates no risk of rapid decomposition. T002251 does not contain any of the structural features mentioned in the UN Recommendations. The occurrence of other chemical groups associated with explosive properties as described in the literature (L. Bretherick: "Handbook of Reactive Chemical Hazards", London, Butterworth, 1979) was also considered. No such groups were present.
2. Oxygen Balance
The oxygen balance was calculated using the equation given in the UN Recommendations. Based on the molecular formula of C9H9NO and a molecular weight of 147.2 g/mol the oxygen balance is about -233.7, which is below –200 and thus not indicating the necessity of experimental testing.
3. Calorimetric Tests
The exothermic decomposition enery was determined using Differential Scanning Calorimetry in a closed gold plated high pressure vessel (DSC). There was no exothermic peak found. Thus the decomposition energy does not exceed the UN limit of 500 J/g (∆ HDec determined between room temperature and 500°C).
Description of key information
The substance T002251 was concluded to be non explosive following desktop assessment in accordance with UN recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods (K2, Lindemann M, 2003).

- non explosive
Additional information
Justification for classification or non-classification
Based on molecular structure and a calorimetric test the substance is not explosive based on the UN recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods. Thus, substance does not need to be classified as an explosive under the CLP regulation.
