Monomodal distribution with a maximum observed at approximately 700µm. Particles with particle sizes > 1000 µm where observed because spherical particles only were sieved out. Non-spherical particles can pass the filter even if they have a maximum elongation > 1000 µm . Furthermore for these measured particle the measured values can vary because there is a dependency of the orientation of the particles in the laser beam.

The median particle size D50 of the test item deduced from the particle size distributions was 631.4 µm.

The particle size D10 of the test item deduced from the particle size distributions was 241.2 µm.

The particle size D90 of the test item deduced from the particle size distributions was 1296.6 µm. Very small proportion (0.01%) has a particle size diameter < 10 µm.

Description of key information

D10: 241.2 µm

D50: 631.4 µm

D90: 1296.6 µm

Particle size distribution is monomodal, maximum at 700 µm, 0.01% of all particles <1 µm, 0.77% of all particles < 10 µm.

Additional information

In a study for the substance diammonium tartrate particle size distribution was determined by laser diffraction technolgy.

The study was conducted similar to guidelines CIPAC MT 187 (Particle size analysis by laser diffraction) and ISO13320: (2009: Particle Size analysis -laser diffraction methods). Due to the broad particle size distribution particles bigger than 1000 µm were sieved out. The resulting particles (82% of all particles) showed a particle size distribution that is monomodal with a maximum at 700 µm particle size. Particles bigger than 1000 µm (10% of all sieved particles have a size >1296.6 µm) were observed in the laser beam because only spherical particles with diameter >1000 µm were sieved out. Non-spherical particles having maximum elongations > 1000 µm but with minimum elongations < 1000µm can pass the filter.
