Biodegradation in water: screening tests

Description of key information

A ready biodegradability study is available with the read-across substance, cloquintocet-mexyl. Cloquintocet-mexyl is structurally similar to cloquintocet acid and is expected to have a very similar biodegradation profile. It should also be noted that cloquintocet-mexyl is hydrolysed to form cloquintocet acid, so a biodegradation test conducted with cloquintocet-mexyl is likely to equally apply to cloquintocet acid. Consequently it is considered that the ready biodegradability study with cloquintocet-mexyl is suitable for read-across purposes.

In the biodegradation study with cloquintocet-mexyl, a solution of the inoculated (activated sludge collected from a sewage treatment plant) mineral medium was spiked with 23.9 mg technical grade cloquintocet-mexyl as the sole source of organic carbon and incubated at 22 °C in the dark. Degradation was followed by determining the carbon dioxide produced which was trapped in sodium hydroxide solution. The amount of carbon dioxide produced from the test substance was expressed as the percentage of theoretical carbon dioxide. The mineralisation of cloquintocet-mexyl under the test conditions was 38 % in 29 days. Based on this result, cloquintocet-mexyl has to be classified as ‘not ready biodegradable'. As such, it is proposed that cloquintocet acid should also be classified as 'not readily biodegradable'.
