No data is available for skin sensitisation of 6-chlorohexyl methacrylate (6-CHMA).

Some concern for skin sensitisation of 6-CHMA is expected based on the similarity with short chain alkyl methacrylates and in particular with 2-ethylhexyl methacrylate CAS 688-84-6 (see document "Read -across hypothesis and justification" in section 13 of this IUCLID dossier). As reported in SIDS Dossier of " Short chain alkyl methacrylates" approved at SIAM 18 (20-23 April 2004), these chemicals are weak sensitisers although there are equivocal results regarding their skin sensitisation.

In SIDS Dossier of " Short chain alkyl methacrylates" approved at SIAM 18 (20-23 April 2004) inside the specific section of 2-ethylhexyl methacrylate (2 -EHMA) CAS 688-84-6 two studies both with high reliability but with different results are reported:

1) 2-EHMA was not skin sensitiser in a study conducted in 1999 according to OECD 406 Guinea Pig Maximisation test (Result: 0/20 animals tested) (Ref. Allen DJ, 1999, EMPICRYL 6068: Magnusson & Kligman Maximisation Study in the Guinea Pig. Safepharm Labs. Ltd., UK Unpublished report SPL project no. 071/634 on behalf of Albright and Wilson)

2) 2-EHMA was skin sensitiser in as study conducted in 1981 according to OECD 406 Guinea Pig Maximisation test (Result: 3/10 animals tested) (Ref. Poole, 1981, Methacrylate de 2-ethyl hexyle (MAE2H); Test for contact sensitisation potential in the Guinea Pig (maximisation test). ICLS Labs. Ltd., Kimpton, unpublished report no. CL81:51:2141, study on behalf of Norsolor / Atofina)

Based on precautionary principle and based on some human studies on skin sensitisation regarding short chain methyl methacrylates reported in SIDS Dossier of " Short chain alkyl methacrylates" approved at SIAM 18 (20-23 April 2004), the classification H317 (Skin Sens. cat.1) is suggested for 6-chlorohexyl methacrylate according to the CLP Regulation (EC n. 1272/2008).

No concern for respiratory sensitisation of 6-CHMA is expected based on the similarity with short chain alkyl methacrylates and in particular with 2-ethylhexyl methacrylate CAS 688-84-6 (see document "Read -across hypothesis and justification" in section 13 of this IUCLID dossier). As reported in SIDS Dossier of " Short chain alkyl methacrylates" approved at SIAM 18 (20-23 April 2004) no cases of human studies of respiratory allergy due to the members of this category have been reported in literature.

Justification for classification or non-classification

No data is available for skin and respiratory sensitisation of 6-chlorohexyl methacrylate (6-CHMA) but some concern for skin sensitisation of 6-CHMA is expected based on the similarity with short chain alkyl methacrylates and in particular with 2-ethylhexyl methacrylate CAS 688-84-6 (see document "Read -across hypothesis and justification" in section 13 of this IUCLID dossier).

Based on the experimental data reported in SIDS Dossier of " Short chain alkyl methacrylates" approved at SIAM 18 (20-23 April 2004) for similar compounds and based on the classification included in annex VI of the CLP regulation for some of them (see document "Read -across hypothesis and justification" in section 13 of this IUCLID dossier) , the classification H317 (Skin Sens. cat.1) is suggested for 6-chlorohexyl methacrylate (6-CHMA) according to the CLP Regulation (EC n. 1272/2008).
