Description of key information

Based on the information obtained from the key study the substance has a water solubility of 21.8 g/L. This agrees with a TGD-approved handbook, which states that the substance is very soluble in water.

Additional information

The water solubility of MIBC was measured in a study of Klimisch-1 reliability by Mollandin and Herrmann (2010), using the flask method. The study, conducted in compliance with the OECD Guidelines for the Testing of Chemicals No. 105 and in accordance with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), reports a water solubility value of 21.8 g/L (interpreted as a qualitative statement of “very soluble”) for MIBC at 20°C and a pH of 7.6. Information regarding water solubility of MIBC also was sourced from two separate handbooks: CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics (81st Ed.) and NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards, both known to contain peer-reviewed data of Klimisch-2 reliability. CRC Handbook reports that MIBC is “slightly soluble” in water; however, no numerical value for concentration or information on solution temperature or pH was reported. NIOSH reports a water solubility of 2% for MIBC, which is interpreted as a qualitative statement of “very soluble”. The subjective discrepancies in the results of studies are likely due to their different scaling systems,i.e., IUCLID and NIOSH versus CRC handbook.
