Description of key information

Short term toxicity to fish

Fish Acute Toxicity test according to OECD Guideline 203 was conducted for Benzyl Propionate. The nominal concentration selected for the experiment were and test fish were exposed to 6.25 mg/L, 12.5 mg/L, 25 mg/L, 50 mg/L & 100 mg/L concentrations for 96 hours. The median lethal concentration (LC50) for Benzyl Propionate on Danio rerio in a 96 hours study on the basis of mortality effect was found to be >12.5 mg/L. Thus, on the basis

of this LC50 value and according to CLP criteria for aquatic classification of the substance, it is concluded

that the substance, is classified under aquatic chronic 3 category

Long term toxicity to fish

The lethal concentration for 50 percent mortality (LC 50, 14 days) value of benzyl propionate in fish was reported as 642.3 mg/L. Based on this value and considering that benzyl propionate is readily bio-degradable in water it can be predicted that this chemical will not exhibit long term toxicity to fish.

Short term toxicity to aquatic invertebates

The lethal concentration for 50 percent mortality (LC 50, 48 hr) value of benzyl propionate in the aquatic invertebrate Daphnia magna was reported as 20 mg/L but the BCF value of benzyl propionate reported were not >= 500 and neither was the Log Kow value greater than or equal to 4.. Thus considering the conditions mentioned in the CLP regulation for classification; benzyl propionate could be assumed to be non toxic to the aquatic invertebrate Daphnia magna.

Long term toxicity to aquatic invertebates

The chronic value for long term toxicity(21 days) to aquatic invertebrate daphnia magna was reported as 11.5 mg/L.

Toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria

The effect of test substance Benzyl propionate, CAS No. 122 -63 -4 was studied on the growth of fresh water green algaChlorella vulgaris.The study was conducted following OECD guideline 201- Alga growth inhibition test. The test concentration chosen for the study were 4.32mg/l, 10.88 mg/l, 27.2mg/l, 68mg/l, 170mg/l and 425mg/l were prepared using stock solution of the test substance using de-ionized water. The green alga was exposed to the test concentration for a period of 72 hours to observe average specific growth rate and % growth inhibition under the effect of test substance. EC50 calculated from equation through probit analysis was observed to be 138.96 mg/L.

Toxicity to micro-organisms

The inhibitory growth concentration (IGC50) value of benzyl propionate in Tetrahymena pyriformis in a 46 hr study on growth inhibition effect was estimated to be 134.091 mg/L.
