Materials and methods

Study type:
other: General description of symptoms and effects seen in workers exposed to butanone vapours

Results and discussion

Clinical signs:
Air analyses revealed concentration of butanone from 300 to 600 ppm.
Workers developed disabling dermatoses and several workers complained of numbness of the fingers and arms.
One worker described one shoulder ‘as though it was made of dough and did not belong to him’ so that he could not lie on it at night.
Another worker complained of numbness in the legs and a tendency for them to suddenly give way under him.
Two men who merely worked in the rooms where the solvent was present in the air but had no occasion to touch it developed dermatitis which originated on the face and was confined to that area.
