Details on test solutions:
Natural local seawater is pumped to holding tanks from Scapa Flow, Orkney. The treatment process was: sand filtered to remove particulate, filtered to 1 µm, heated to 16 ºC, UV treated, degassed and held at a quantity of 3000 to 5000 litres. The water is constantly pumped through the system and trickle replenished as the water is used.

Executive summary:

A 96h limit test in marine water for the test material using Cyprinodon variegatus was conducted according to OSPAR Commission 2006 Part B Protocol for a fish acute toxicity test which is adapted from the OCED TG 203 for the marine environment. The test concentration is based on the LC/EC50 of the test material between most the sensitive species Skeletonema costatum and Acartia tonsa. Testing has indicated that the algal species was the more sensitive from allied studies.

 

Ten fish were exposed to 74.3 mg/L for 96 hours with replacement of media after 48h. No mortality was reported in either the test concentration or the control vessels. All validity criterion were met and the test substance exhibited no effect at 74.31mg/L after 96h (directly via seawater) to the marine fish Cyprinodon variegatus in the water phase.
