Description of key information

Short-term EC50/L50 values for Benzene, 1,1’-oxybis(methyl-, sulfonated, ammonium salt (ca 50%) (CAS no. 75314-26-0) are available for three trophic levels of the aquatic freshwater compartment (aquatic invertebrates, algae, fish).

The acute toxicity of Benzene, 1,1’-oxybis(methyl-, sulfonated, ammonium salt (ca 50%) (CAS no. 75314-26-0) to Desmodesmus subspicatus was determined in a 72 hour static test according to OECD guideline 201. The median effect concentration with respect to growth rate (ErC50/0–3 days) of Benzene, 1,1’-oxybis(methyl-, sulfonated, ammonium salt (ca 50%) to Desmodesmus subspicatus was estimated to be 17.8 mg/l based on the geometric mean of the measured concentrations. The no observed effect concentration (NOErC) with respect to growth rate was determined to be 2.39 mg/l based on the geometric mean of the measured concentrations. The results of the test can be considered reliable without restriction.

The acute toxicity of the main component of Benzene, 1,1’-oxybis(methyl-, sulfonated, ammonium salt (ca 50%) (CAS no. 75314-26-0) to Daphnia magna was determined in a 48 hour static test according to OECD guideline 202. The median effect concentrations (EC50) of the main component of Benzene, 1,1’-oxybis(methyl-, sulfonated, ammonium salt (ca 50%) on Daphnia magna were estimated to be 13.7 mg/l measured concentration after 24 h and 11.4 mg/l measured concentration after 48 h of exposure. The NOEC values were determined to be 10.2 mg/l measured concentration after 24 h and 6.39 mg/l measured concentration after 48 h of exposure. The results of the test can be considered reliable without restriction.

The acute lethal toxicity of the main component of Benzene, 1,1’-oxybis(methyl-, sulfonated, ammonium salt (ca 50%) (CAS no. 75314-26-0) to Zebrafish Danio rerio was determined in a 96 hour semi-static test according to OECD guideline 203. The median effect concentrations (LC50) of the main component of Benzene, 1,1’-oxybis(methyl-, sulfonated, ammonium salt (ca 50%) on Zebrafish Danio rerio were estimated to be > 11.4 mg/l nominal concentration after 96 h of exposure. The NOEC values were determined to be 11.4 mg/l nominal concentration after 96 h of exposure. The results of the test can be considered reliable without restriction.

Conclusion on classification

The environmental classification of Benzene, 1,1’-oxybis(methyl-, sulfonated, ammonium salt (ca 50%) (CAS no. 75314 -26 -0) is currently not harmonised according to the CLP Regulation (EC) 1272/2008. Based on available acute aquatic toxicity data, the lowest valid effect concentration for freshwater aquatic organisms is 11.4 mg/L (EC50 for aquatic invertebrates and LC50 for fish). Based on the available acute data, the substance should not be classified for acute toxicity following Annex I, table 4.1.0a of the CLP regulation (there are no acute values <=1 mg/L).

Because the substance is not readily biodegradable, Benzene, 1,1’-oxybis(methyl-, sulfonated, ammonium salt (ca 50%) (CAS no. 75314 -26 -0) is classified Aquatic Chronic 3, H412, based on lowest valid effect concentration for freshwater aquatic organisms (EC50 = 11.4 mg/L), following Annex I, table 4.1.0b iii of the CLP regulation.
