Data platform availability banner - registered substances factsheets

Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

First-aid measures

Eye Contact:
Check for and remove any contact lenses. Immediately flush eyes with running water for at least 15 minutes, keeping eyelids
open. Cold water may be used. Do not use an eye ointment. Seek medical attention.
Skin Contact:
After contact with skin, wash immediately with plenty of water. Gently and thoroughly wash the contaminated skin with running
water and non-abrasive soap. Be particularly careful to clean folds, crevices, creases and groin. Cover the irritated skin with an
emollient. If irritation persists, seek medical attention. Wash contaminated clothing before reusing.
Serious Skin Contact: Not available.
Inhalation: Allow the victim to rest in a well ventilated area. Seek immediate medical attention.
Serious Inhalation:
If fumes are still suspected to be present, the rescuer should wear an appropriate mask or a self-contained breathing
apparatus. Evacuate the victim to a safe area as soon as possible. If the victim is breathing, check for unusual breath odors.
Loosen tight clothing such as a collar, tie, belt or waistband. If breathing is difficult, administer oxygen. If the victim is not
breathing, perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Maintain an open airway. WARNING: It may be hazardous to the person
providing aid to give mouth-to-mouth resuscitation when the inhaled material is toxic, infectious or corrosive. Seek immediate
medical attention.
Ingestion:
Since the product is a gas and that it is mostly probable that it will be inhaled more than ingested, please consider first to look
at the preventive measures in case of inhalation.

Accidental release measures

Small Spill: Try to stop the gaseous leak by taping the container with an appropriate material (tape, stretched plastic).
Large Spill:
Toxic gas. Flammable gas. Let evaporate. If possible, turn leaking container so that gas escapes rather than liquid. Do not
touch spilled material. Do not direct water at spill or source. Use water spray curtain to divert vapor drift. Use water spray to
reduce vapors. Prevent entry into sewers, basements or confined areas. Eliminate all ignition sources. Be careful that the
product is not present at a concentration level above TLV. Check TLV on the MSDS and with local authorities.

Handling and storage

Precautions:
Keep locked up Keep away from heat. Keep away from sources of ignition. Empty containers pose a fire risk, evaporate the
residue under a fume hood. Ground all equipment containing material. Do not ingest. Do not breathe gas/fumes/ vapour/spray.
Avoid contact with eyes In case of insufficient ventilation, wear suitable respiratory equipment If you feel unwell, seek medical
attention and show the label when possible. Keep container tightly closed and in a well-ventilated place.
Storage: Compressed gases should be stored in a separate safety storage cabinet or room.

Exposure controls / personal protection

Engineering Controls: Ventilation is normally required when handling or using this product.
Personal Protection:
Splash goggles. Lab coat. Vapor respirator. Be sure to use an approved/certified respirator or equivalent. Gloves.
Personal Protection in Case of a Large Spill:
Splash goggles. Full suit. Vapor respirator. Boots. Gloves. A self contained breathing apparatus should be used to avoid
inhalation of the product. Suggested protective clothing might not be sufficient; consult a specialist BEFORE handling this
product.
Exposure Limits:
TWA: 1000 (ppm) TWA: 2600 (mg/m3) Consult local authorities for acceptable exposure limits.

Stability and reactivity

ETHYL CHLORIDE(75-00-3) is heat sensitive. This compound will hydrolyze in the presence of alkalis and water. ETHYL CHLORIDE(75-00-3) reacts with water or steam to produce toxic and corrosive fumes. ETHYL CHLORIDE(75-00-3) can also react vigorously with oxidizing materials. The vapor forms highly flammable mixtures with air. A mixture of this compound with potassium is shock-sensitive. Contact with chemically active metals such as Na, K, Ca, powdered Al, Zn and Mg may result in violent reactions.

Disposal considerations

Do not attempt to dispose of residual waste or unused quantities. Return in the shipping container PROPERLY
LABELED, WITH ANY VALVE OUTLET PLUGS OR CAPS SECURED AND VALVE PROTECTION CAP
IN PLACE to BOC Gases or authorized distributor for proper disposal.
