Description of key information

Toxicity to aquatic algae: key study in Selenastrum capricornutum: results from a study report leading to the conclusion that:
NOEC (0-72h) of Zirkonium-tetrakis(isobutyrato) = ≥ WAF (a) (100 mg/L)
EC50 (0-72h) of Zirkonium-tetrakis(isobutyrato) = > WAF (a) (100 mg/L)
(a) The WAF was obtained by preparing an aqueous extract from a “loading rate” of 111.1 mg (target value) Zirkonium-tetrakis(isobutyrato) per L nutrient medium.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Key study: experimental result from a study report in Selenastrum capricornutum, according to the directive 92/69/EEC Part C.3, by a growth inhibition test.

As the test substance was of only limited solubility in culture media (nutrient medium), an aqueous extract from a "loading rate" of 111.1 mg (target value) Zirkonium-tetrakis(isobutyrato)

per L nutrient medium was prepared. This water accommodated fraction (WAF) was used as the highest test substance concentration and were further diluted with nutrient medium to obtain the concentrations WAF/2, WAF/4, WAF/8, WAF/16, WAF/32, WAF/64, WAF/128 and WAF/256.

The very low solubility of the test substance in water (<1mg/L), the rapid degradation of the substance and the formation of a variety of degradation and build-up products are the reasons why no chemical analysis of the actual test substance concentration was performed, neither at the start nor at the end of the exposure.

It is concluded that:

NOEC (0-72h) = ≥ WAF (a) (100 mg/L)

EC50 (0-72h) = > WAF (a) (100 mg/L)

(a) The WAF was obtained by preparing an aqueous extract from a “loading rate” of 111.1 mg (target value) Zirkonium-tetrakis(isobutyrate) per L nutrient medium.
