Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The substance is not flammable, but reacts violently with water without the emission of flammable gases.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
non flammable

Additional information

Data from peer-reviewed databases, adequate for assessment.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The substance reacts violently with water; however, no flammable gases are emitted (the reaction products are HF and HIO3). Therefore the substance should be labelled with EUH014: "Reacts violently with water" according to EU Classification, Labeling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures (CLP) Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008. According to EU Directive 67/548/EEC it should be labelled with R14: Reacts violently with water.

The flammability of the substance is determined by its ability to react with oxygen of air. In IF5, no reaction with oxygen is possible, as fluoride is a more electronegative element than oxygen and cannot be oxidised, and iodine is already present in the unstable oxidised state (+5). Therefore the substance is considered not flammable and classification is not warranted in accordance with EU Directive 67/548/EEC and EU Classification, Labeling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures (CLP) Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008.
