Toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria

Description of key information

No data are available on the short-term toxicity of the registered substance to algae. A 72-h EC50 value of >3.6 mg/L and NOEC of ≥3.6 mg/L have however been determined for the effects of a read-across substance, trimethoxy(methyl) silane (CAS 1185-55-3), on growth rate of Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata based on geometric mean measured exposure concentrations of the test substance. The test substance is known to hydrolyse rapidly in water and 3.6 mg/L was the concentration measured in the highest nominal test concentration of 120 mg/L. It is therefore likely that the test organisms were predominantly exposed to the hydrolysis products of the substance. The measured data is supported by predictions for the hydrolysis product methylsilanetriol (96-h LC50 value of 2100 mg/l).

No data are available on the short-term toxicity of the registered substance to algae. However, data are available for the read-across substance , trimethoxy(methyl)silane (CAS 1185-55-3). Trimethoxy(methyl)silane (CAS 1185-55-3), hydrolyses in contact with water at pH 7 (half-life approx. 2 hours), producing methanol and methylsilanetriol.The properties of methanol are well characterized; it is non-toxic to the environment and it is considered unlikely that its presence would significantly affect the results of tests performed with Triethoxy(methyl) silane.Since both substances share the same silanol product it is considered appropriate to read across the available data on trimethoxy(methyl)silane.The measured data is supported by predictions for the hydrolysis productmethylsilanetriol (96-h LC50 value of 2100 mg/l).
