Description of key information

Because of the highly anionic nature of the substance and its instability in aqueous media, terrestrial bioaccumulation is unlikely and testing is not considered necessary. 

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The substance has a very low log Pow, and readily dissociates in aqueous solution or in contact with soil moisture, rendering any quantitatively relevant adsorption onto soils as unlikely. Therefore, bioaccumulation is unlikely and testing is formally not required. Moreover, sulfite substances are chemically unstable in the environment and under physiological conditions in biota, being prone to oxidation to sulfates.
