- Endpoint:
- flash point of flammable liquids
- Type of information:
- experimental study
- Adequacy of study:
- key study
- Study period:
- 25 May to 21 June 2012
- Reliability:
- 2 (reliable with restrictions)
- Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
- guideline study with acceptable restrictions
- Remarks:
- The study was conducted according to an internationally recognised method, and under GLP, but experimental details are missing. The substance is adequately identified, but some data on composition is missing. Therefore validation applies with restrictions.
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- EU Method A.9 (Flash-Point)
- Deviations:
- yes
- Remarks:
- no isomers ratio; atmospheric pressure not specified, but assumed to be ambient.
- Principles of method if other than guideline:
- Not applicable
- GLP compliance:
- yes (incl. QA statement)
- Remarks:
- 11 March 2011
- Type of method:
- closed cup
- Flash point apparatus:
- Setaflash apparatus
- Dynamic viscosity of test material:
- No data
- Specific details on test material used for the study:
- - Physical state/Appearance : Light yellow translucent liquid
- Storage : The test substance was stored at room temperature protected from direct sun light. - Key result
- Flash point:
- 159 °C
- Atm. press.:
- ca. 1 atm
- Interpretation of results:
- GHS criteria not met
- Remarks:
- GHS and EU-CLP criteria not met
- Conclusions:
- The flash point of the test substance is above the classification thresholds of 60 °C (CLP criteria) or 93 °C (GHS criteria). Therefore, the test substance is NOT a flammable liquid according to CLP and GHS criteria.
- Executive summary:
The flash point of the test substance was determined under GLP according to EU Method A.9, using a closed cup Setaflash apparatus.
After a screening determination, two main runs were performed and found identical. The result was retained as final.
The flash point of test substance has been determined to be 159 °C.
Reference
In a first experiment, the temperature was increased by successive steps of +10 °C, using 4 mL of sample. Flashing occurred between 151 and 161 °C.
The procedure was reproduced, and the temperature was regularly increased by successive steps of 1.0°C. Replicate tests showed that no flash was observed at 158 °C, but flashing occurred at 159 °C in every case.
Flash point = 159 °C
Reference material: diethyl-phtalate. The measured value complied with 159 ± 3 °C for flash point.
Description of key information
The substance is NOT classified as flammable liquid neither according to CLP Regulation criteria, nor to UN GHS.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Flash point at 101 325 Pa:
- 159 °C
Additional information
A reliable experimental study, conducted according to a recognized EC method and under GLP, is available. Despite restrictions due to incomplete test item identification it is considered as key study, and the result is retained as key data.
