Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

PBT assessment: overall result

Reference
Name:
(S)-1,3,4-trihydroxybutan-2-one
Type of composition:
boundary composition of the substance
State / form:
liquid
Reference substance:
(S)-1,3,4-trihydroxybutan-2-one
PBT status:
the substance is not PBT / vPvB
Justification:

The substance is readily biodegradable.

Erythrulose undergoes 77% biodegradation after 28 days in the test conditions. The 10- day window criterion is also fulfilled (11% biodegradation on day 5 and 67% on day 15).

In an Acute Toxicity Study according to ISO International Standard 7346-1, EEC directive 92/69, Part C.1 and OECD TG 202 with Carp (Cyprinus carpio) the 96h-LC50 of the test item was determined to be > 100 mg/L (nominal).

Under the conditions of the present study (S)-1,3,4-trihydroxybutan-2-one did not induce acute immobilisation of Daphnia magna at 100 mg/l after 48 hours of exposure (NOEC).
(S)-1,3,4-trihydroxybutan-2-one did not induce acute immobilisation of Daphnia magna at 100 mg/l after 48 hours of exposure (NOEC).

No inhibition of cell growth or reduction of growth rate was recorded at any of the concentrations of (S)-1,3,4-trihydroxybutan-2-one tested.
Hence, the EC50 for both cell growth inhibition and growth rate reduction was above 100 mg/l, the regulatory limit concentration.

The partition coefficient (n-octanol/water) of Erythrulose was determined to be 7x10-3 (log P0= -2.16) at 20.0 ± 1.0°C using the Flask-shaking method.
