- Endpoint:
- explosive properties of explosives
- Data waiving:
- study scientifically not necessary / other information available
- Justification for data waiving:
- the study does not need to be conducted because there are no chemical groups present in the molecule which are associated with explosive properties
- Endpoint:
- explosive properties of explosives
- Type of information:
- experimental study
- Adequacy of study:
- supporting study
- Reliability:
- 2 (reliable with restrictions)
- Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
- guideline study with acceptable restrictions
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- other: UN-MTC Part III, sub-section 20.3.3.3 'Thermal stability and exothermic decomposition energy'
- Version / remarks:
- Appendix 6, point 3 ‘Screening procedures for substances which may have explosive properties’ of
UN-MTC refers to the decomposition energy. - Principles of method if other than guideline:
- The Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) measurement was carried out as stipulated in UN-MTC (Part III, sub-section 20.3.3.3 Thermal stability and exothermic decomposition energy).
- GLP compliance:
- no
- Other quality assurance:
- ISO/IEC 17025 (General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories)
- Parameter:
- other: DTA
- Remarks on result:
- other: heat release about 175 kJ/kg
- Interpretation of results:
- GHS criteria not met
- Conclusions:
- HPP 12879-1 has no explosive properties.
- Executive summary:
The Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) measurement was carried out as stipulated in UN-MTC (Part III, sub-section 20.3.3.3 Thermal stability and exothermic decomposition energy).
A small amount of the test item (22.6 mg) was weighed into a crucible made of glass that was sealed afterwards. The temperature difference between sample and reference (Al2O3) was measured as a function of temperature and was recorded electronically.
At a heating rate of 3 K/min, an exothermic reaction started at about 315 °C with a heat release of about 175 kJ/kg, which was not completed until 500 °C. Based on this thermal behaviour it is expected that the substance is not explosive.
Therefore, it can be concluded by expert judgement that ‘HPP 12879-1 (Katalysator BM 4)' has no explosive properties. Testing according to UN-MTC test procedure is not necessary.

The exothermic decomposition enthalpy was calculated by integration of the exothermal peak. At a heating rate of 3 K/min, an exothermic reaction started at about 315 °C with a heat release of about 175 kJ/kg, which was not completed until 500 °C. Description of key information
HPP 12879 -1 has no explosive properties.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Explosiveness:
- non explosive
Additional information
There are no chemical groups associated with explosive properties present in the molecule. Further more based on the thermal behaviour (heat release about 175 J/g) it is expected that the substance is not explosive.
Justification for classification or non-classification
The available data on explosive properties of the test substance do not meet the criteria for classification according to Regulation (EC) 1272/2008, and are therefore conclusive but not sufficient for classification.
