In accordance with REACH Regulation 1907/2008 Annex VIII Column 2, testing need not be undertaken if microbial toxicity is unlikely (if the substance is insoluble in water or if the substance is readily biodegradable).
Tetrahydrophthalic anhydride rapidly hydrolyses to the acid in aqueous media.
The concentration of 1,2,3,6 -tetrahydrophthalic anhydride (THPA D4), one of the main isomers of the UVCB substance, investigated in a test for ready biodegradability in which no toxicity was seen, may be regarded as the NOEC for toxicity to microbial organisms.
The ready biodegradability of the acids was confirmed by QSAR estimations. Waiving of the endpoint is thus justified.
