APPEARANCE AND STATE

Basic Blue 140 is a dark blue/purple organic powder at 20 °C and 1013 hPa; it is primarily manufactured/used as an aqueous solution, therefore the particle size is not relevant for Chemical Safety Assessment.

Thermal behaviour was investigated by the Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). During the first experiment, a first endothermic peak was observed between start temperature and 180 °C, probably caused by the water evaporation. The second endothermic peak was observed between 235 and 356 °C, caused by the thermal decomposition of the test substance. After the experiment the sample had lost 1.19 mg (44.07 %) of its mass and the residue had a black colour. A second experiment confirmed that the peak at 180 °C was caused by the water evaporation: after the experiment the sample had lost 0.22 mg (7.36 %) of its mass and the aspect was not change. In conclusion, the substance decomposes before melt/boil.

The density of the test substance was measured using the pycnometer method and was calculated as a ratio of densities of the substance at 20 °C and water at 4 °C. the relative density resulted to be 1.42 at 20 °C.

SOLUBILITY and PARTITION COEFFICIENT

Water solubility test was performed for the test substance: three flasks were used for test. 30.00 g of the test substance was weighed into each one of three stoppered glass flasks. The volume of 200 ml of double distilled water was added into each of them. The glass vessels were tightly closed with glass stoppers and shaken in a shaking water bath at the temperature of 30 °C within one, two and three days. After the shaking had been finished, the solutions were tempered down to 20 ± 0.1 °C for a period 24 hours. After three days of shaking the mixtures had very viscous almost pasty consistency. It was not possible to determine absolute test substance water solubility by flask method due to the high viscosity of the test substance mixture with water. However, based on microscopy observation the mixtures were homogeneous in all flasks and it has been concluded that the expected solubility in water should be higher than 150 g/l.

Partition coefficient could be estimated on the base of the water solubility and on the base ot solubility in octanol. Based on the results of previously mentioned study, it was known that it was not possible to determine absolute water solubility of test substance in water by flask method due to the high viscosity. The test substance resulted practically insoluble in octanol (solubility under the limit of quantification, i.e. 1.493 mg/l ultra pure water). Thus the determination of partition coefficient n-octanol/water cannot be performed. However, it was concluded that the partition coefficient (log P) of the test substance is lower than -2.0.

PHYSICAL HAZARDS

Basic Blue 140 does not ignite and propagate combustion; the screening evaluation failed to evidence reasons of concern, on the basis of the chemical structure analysis and the thermal behaviour investigation.

It does not meet the criteria to be considered as flammable/explosive/oxidising.
